How do I pick the right cruise for me?
There's dozens of cruise lines and even more options for itineraries, so how do you decide which one is right for you?
There's a few questions to ask yourself to help decide what the best cruise line is for you:
- Who are you traveling with?
- What time of year are you going?
- What type of activities do you want to do?
Who Are You Traveling With?
Cruises are great for group travel because most cruise lines truly have something for everyone. If you're traveling with kids, many large ships have kids-focused activities like water slides, kids clubs, arcades, and so much more. Also, ships have accessible rooms so if you're traveling with folks with mobility concerns, they will be able to participate in many activities around the ship (although be sure to check with your cruise line, not all ports are accessible). Virgin Voyages (my personal favourite) is adult-only so great for couples or bachelor/ette trips. And, if you're traveling solo, many cruise lines will have activities for solo-travelers to meet. It can be a great way to travel solo without the stress of transfers.
What Time of Year Are You Going?
Weather will have a big impact on the cruises you choose. I wouldn't recommend the Caribbean in August-October, or the Med too early in the Spring, unless you like hanging out indoors. Also, unlike other types of vacations, you're locked into their dates. I have chosen cruise lines because their dates aligned better to my travel needs than others.
What Type of Activities Do You Want To Do?
Some cruise lines will offer more adventure-type activities and excursions and others will offer a slower-paced lectures. Many will offer trivia, karaoke, and other group activations. And you have the option to book excursions through the cruise line, or separately, explore the ports on your own, or stay on the ship while in dock.
